Private Enterprise Defended
[Per Press Association. —Copyright.] INVERCARGILL, This Day. The rights of private enterprise were defended by Mr J. Hargest, M.P;, National candidate for Awarua, in an address. Mr Hargest charged the Labour Government With planning the socialisation of all industry, and claimed that the socialisation of production, one of the planks of the Labour platform, meant State ownership of all land.
The most powerful man in New Zealand today, said Mr Hargest, was the president of the Federation cf Labour, Mr A. McLagan. He, with Mr J. Roberts, controlled the Labour movement in this country. He was more powerful than Mr Savage. Their aim was the socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange. A great many people today thought the Labour Party was the only party with the interests of the workers at heart, said the candidate, but the National Party stood for the Interests of the working class just as wholethat was the difference beMR %two parties.
