Maungaturoto Police Court

Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., presided at a short sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Maungaturoto on Thursday morning. The majority of defendants were charged with breaches of the traffic regulations and were dealt with accordingly. No Certificate of Fitness. Percy Stewart, of Hakaru, was charged with driving a vehicle at Matakohe on August 6, without having taken out .a warrant of fitness. In explaining the circumstances Com stable Cannon said defendant had run off the road and hit a telephone pole. While investigating the mishap witness said he had found that the warrant of fitness had expired and had not been renewed. The car was of modern make and was in good order. N . ' “There are far too many of these cases” said the Magistrate, “and people are not careful enough in these matters. I have some sympathy with you, however, on account of the special circumstances and the fact that your car was in order is in your Under the circumstances you will be fined 10/- and 12/- costs,” concluded Mr Morris. Oyster Picket's Fined. Allan Hale and Fred Hale, on a charge of taking oysters ,at Pahi on July 10, were each fined £1 and ordered to pay 22/-. costs. - Mr A. Tilby, Inspector of Fisheries, said he saw the two defendants picking oysters quite openly on a Sunday afternoon. They were under the impression that notices 'in the Press stating that the season would open on June 29, implied that any one could pick oysters. The notices were rather misleading said Mr. Tilby. On information laid by Constable Cannon, Luke Webb, charged with failing to keep to the left, was fined 30/ and 22/ costs. ,

Charged with three breaches of the traffic regulations,. K. Jackson, of Kaiwaka, was fined a total of £3 10/ and 32/- costs

A Robertson, of Mangawai, was fined £2 10/ and 12/- costs for carrying goods in a manner contrary to the terms of his license.
