H. Beale, Best Speaker At H.S. Speech Concert

The first annual speech contest of the Whangarei High School was held in the Girls’ Hall on Thursday evening. Nine speakers took the platform and, considering that it was the Initial contest, the standard of their addresses was very good. The rules of the competition required that each speaker should talk for 15 minutes on some famous man or woman, and the selections showed .a wide variety of choice, which included social workers, missionaries, explorers, statesmen and literary artists. It was, perhaps, to be regretted that only one competitor chose a New Zealander, but nevertheless it was- obvious ! that the man or woman selected by the others had deeply impressed them. Judges’ Placings. The judges, Messrs R. K. Trimmer and A. T. Brainsby, made the following awards. — Best speech, H. Beale (Disraeli); girls’ contest, Janet Smith (Katherine Mansfield) 1, Maida Cummack (Mary Slessor) 2. Boys’ contest, H. Beale (Disraeli) 1, W. Flux (Edward VII.) 2. Special mention was also made of the speeches by H. Harrington and C. B. McMillan. High Standard Reached. Both judges addressed the gathering and, in addition to explaining their system of marking and placing, gave valuable advice to the competitors, all of whom were commended for their courage and the excellence of their matter. At the conclusion of the function Mr W. A. Given, who, in the unavoidable absence of the headmaster, Mr A. R. Ryder, acted as chairman, expressed the thanks of the school to the judges and announced that both gentlemen had arranged to present prizes to the winners. The following is a list of the competitors and their subjects.—R. Gnrr (Marconi), Janet Grant (Elizabeth Fry), I. Owen (Heraclius), Janet Smith '(Katherine Mansfield), C. B. McMillan (Marco Polo), H. Beale (Disraeli), Maida Cummack (Mary Slessor), H. Harrington (Lord Palmerston), W. Flux (Edward VII.).

Billy Direct, a four-year-old pacer, set a new world’s record for a mile in harness by registering 1.55 at Lexington.
