Mr Guy Well Received In Bay Centres

Mr H. F. Guy has been prosecuting his candidature for the Bay of Islands seat with considerable success. At Waimate North, Mr H. T. Atkinson, the county chairman, presided.over an attendance of about 30. Mr Guy spoke for an hour and a half, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence. No questions were asked. Forty present at Taheke accorded an excellent hearing to Mr Guy who spoke on the socialistic activities of the present Government and the necessity for a return to democracy. The mover of the vote of thanks, which was carried, said that confidence would be expressed on October 15. Early this week Mr Guy addressed four meetings in one day. Each of the gatherings at' Whananaki, Helena Bay, Opuawhanga and Whakapara, were well attended and votes of thanks and confidence were carried unanimously. Whose Policy? Mr Guy pointed out in the course of his speeches that the Labour Party’s recent manifesto was signed by Messrs Savage (Prime Minister), J.Rcberts and Wilson (president and secretary respectively of the Labour* Federation). Was this manifesto, he asked, issued by the Federation of Labour or the Parliamentary group.

Public Works Problem Mr Guy also referred to the problems created by the Labour Government in putting 23,000 men under canvas at a huge cost to the taxpayer. He went on to say how detrimental this was to men therp selves, and how, under the Labour regime, they were required to move about from camp to camp without any chance of setting up homes, and this at the expense of the taxpayer and at continually rising costs to all sections of the community. As a preferential alternative to this, Mr Guy advocated the proposal of the National Party which was to decrease taxation, leaving the money with the taxpayer and permitting its use to absorb the workers into industry, both farming and manufacturing. Thus production would, be increased and the problems of unemployment relieved and the strain on the taxpayer reduced. Confidence All Round At the boundary centre of Whakapara, a unique tribute was extended to the National Party at the close of Mr Guy’s address. It was moved by Mr Porter and carried by a hearty vote of applause, “That this meeting signifies its confidence in Mr H. F, Guy for the Bay cf Islands: Mr A. J. Mui'doch for Marsden, HI. Hon., J. G. Coates for Kaipara, and the National Party for New Zealand.”
