The Footfault Controversy
"Wo are getting carried away with this footfault business." said the president, Mr K. Hayr, when the question of umpiring was being discussed at last night's annual meeting of the North Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. A letter was received from the Wellington Lawn Tennis Umpires' Association, asking that a similar organisation should !;e formed in Northland. Mr J. A. 1 Sissons doubted that support for the movement would bo forthcoming as yet. Umpiring “Rafferty." ‘On the other hand, much of the umpiring wo see is rafferty. and there is a great deal of room for improvement," declared Mr M. M, Baigent. The president remarked upon the attention which had been focussed upon the footfault ruling overseas. ‘lt docs not necessarily mean that every umpire who calls a footfault is an efficient umpire,” lie declared. "The trouble is largely that many of them do not know when to call.” Members considered that it: would bo a step in the right direction if the suggested organisation could be formed, and it was decided that the association should call a meeting for that purpose.
