Will Strike Spread?
(Received 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. There appears to be no doubt about the position of the coal miners in States other than New South Wales, jn regard to the general strike, which is threatened to start tomorrow.
Although the Victorian branch of the Miners’ Federation is prepared for a long stoppage, members have not yet been instructed that they must begin a general strike on Friday. It is doubtful whether Queensland miners will strike. If they do, it will not be,until after Monday, when stopwork meetings will be held. The coal miners of Tasmania, despite their objections as individuals to a general strike, apparently are to be forced into a Commonwealth strike. Men on the Tasmanian coalfields do not attempt to conceal their objection to a cessation of work.
