Heavy Easterly Gale; Vessels Sheltering At Russell
\[Special to “Northern Advocate,”i RUSSELL. This Day. Russell beaches, which had hitherto been alive with children enjoying the sunshine of the school holidays, were deserted on Thursday, and yesterday, a cold easterly wind, accompanied by occasional bitter rain squalls, being the reason.
Haven at Russell. Heavy seas have been running since Thursday evening, and on Friday morning the Auckland scow Owiti, heavily laden with shingle, arrived at Russell Bay for shelter and eventually tieci up at the wharf.
The wind increased in force as the day progressed, and by evening had reached gale force, driving the Northern Company’s auxiliary schooner, Paroto, also into port. She berthea shortly after 7 p.m. and this morning the Russell wharf presented a decided ly busy appearance, with two coastal vessels tied up amid the usual numerous smaller craft. Tiie heavy gale and mountainous seas around Cape Brett and down the coast made conditions extremely unpleasant. and the coastal motorpowered schooner, Clansman, returning to Auckland from Far Northern ports, found the necessary shelter in Waipiro Bay, where she is riding at anchor until the storm abates. The Land’s End tied up in a sheltered position at Opua wharf.
Rough Ferry Crossing. Passengers on the launches plying on the Opua-Paihia-Russell service had a “rocky” crossing of the harbour last evening, the wind and tide striking broadside in opposite directions. Accompanied by heavy rain, the gale raged all night and showed no signs of abatement this morning.
