Defence Rifle Club's Annual Meeting

A successful year was reviewed at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Defence Rifle Club, held during the week-end, and bright prospects are entertained for the coming season’s activities.

There were ten members present at the meeting, Which was presided over by Mr J. H. Ashton. Officers were elected as follows: — Patron, Mr W. Jones; president, Mr J. H. Ashton; vice-president, Mr G, Neville; secretary, Sergeant-Major J. Thomson; committee, Messrs. J. Norris, W. Boreham. and J. Lichfield; range officer, Mr E. A. Foote; handicapper, Mr J. Lichfield. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring secretary, Mr S. J. Snow. The opening day for the 1938-39 season was fixed for October 2. the programme being a four-range shoot.

Competition Rules. It was decided that trophy competitions this year be confined to ranges of 300, 500 and 600 yards, the programme to be arranged by the committee. The requirements for the club championship were discussed, and it was agreed that the minimum should be 10 per cent, of the scores obtained in five double shoots at 300 yards, and 10 sheets at 500 and 600 yards, together with the shoot over 300, 500 and 600 yards, 1o be held on the final day.

Trophies Presented. The presentation ot xrophies won during the past season was made as follows: — Whangarei Championship, Mr J. H. Ashton; Rose Bowl, Mr J. H. Ashton; Kelly Cup, Mr J. H. Ashton; Fisher Shield, Mr W. Norris; Palmer Cup, Mr J. Lichfield; Riverhead Cup. Mr W. Norris. It was reported that during the year possibles oVcr various ranges were scored as follows: —W. Norris, one at 300, two at 500. and one at 600 yards; J. Lichfield, two at 500 yards: J. H. Ashton, one at 600 yards; W. S. Boreham, two at 500 yards; G. Neville, two at 500 yards; J. Norris one at fiOf. yards,

The club is inviting members of the Territorial defence forces who desire to ;ioin in the shoots to become honorary members. The matter of ammunition grants from the Defence Department for this purpose is under cohsideration.
