Britain’s Warship Building

[British Official Wireless.'] . (Received 2.0 p.m.) RUGBY, August 19. Orders have been placed for Dido class cruisers. These are the first units in the 1938 programme to be ordered, apart from motor torpedo boats. These will complete the second squadron of five Dido ships, as seven are already being built under previous programmes. They are of 5450 tons each, and will cost about £1,250,000 each. There are now 19 cruisers of all classes being built or ordered, and four more to be authorised later will be vessels of 8000 tons.

Other contracts outstanding under the 1938 programme include two battleships of not more than 40,000 tons, one large aircraft-carrier, three submarines, a fleet of air arm supply and repair ship, and various auxiliaries.
