Pope’s Appeal for Peace

(Received 2.30 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, August 18. Count Torre, chief editor of “Obsqrvaltore Romajno,” appeals to the Government to avert war. He repeats the Pope’s (appeals for peace, and describes the feeling of an “impending catastrophe,” which is widespread in Europe. This feeling, he says, is created by many evils, in which he includes the German manoeuvres, the Sudeten crisis, the war in China and the general friction between many countries. Count Torre declares that nothing could be more disastrous than the terrible delusion that w(ar is a liberating force.

The signing of the articles indicates that it has been read and approved by the Pope.
