Historic Gum Plantation

Recalling the incipient stage in the development of Kaltaia, and bearing testimony to the foresight of the first residents, [is & plantation of gum trees, now of great height, on a hill close to and overlooking the township of Kaitaia. The plantation forms part of or adjoins a property owned by Miss Sophie Matthews, who has looked hskance at any movement involving the destruction of the trees. Part of the plantation reaches the road reserve of what has been named, without much justification up to the present time, Eden Terrace. There has been *a request for an extension of the formation of /this street, and the work has been taken in. hand. To carry' the street to' the desired point, some of the old gum trees are being destroyed. This, however, appears to be necessary, if valuable sections are to serve for residential purposes.
