N.Z. Pigs As Good As Any
That Now Zealand porker pigs are considered in England to be of the best quality coming forward for the Heme trade is the view expressed by the chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Mr T. A. Duncan, in his report for submission to the annual meeting of delegates later in August.
‘‘During the year regulations were gazetted for the compulsory grading of all baconcr pigs," states Mr Duncan. “These regulations came into force as from February 4. 1938, and apply to all baconer pigs between the weights of 121 and 180 lbs., whether they are for export, unexportable. or for local consumption. “The supervision of the grading is canned out by meat inspectors of the Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the board’s supervising graders. As producers are now being paid for their baconer pigs according to grade it is in every producer’s interest to produce as many pigs as possible which grade number one prime. ;
“The national scheme introduced last year by the Department of Agriculture and which provides a practical and qualified instructional service should also do much to improve the general type and quality of our pigs. New Zealand porker pigs continue to be favourably reported on by the trade at Home, in whose opinion there is no getter quality coming on to the market.
“In view of the steady increase in our shipments of baconer pigs the board is of the opinion that the compulsory grading scheme now adopted is a step in the right direction and should do much to improve the quality and thereby enhance the returns received by producers of baconers. “The advertising of New Zealand pork in Great Bxfftain continues to be specially featured in trade papers, .and a fresh issue of attractive display material has been made to x-etailers.”
