Unions Break Away From Bridges Group
Four unions affiliated to the Committee of Industrial Organisation, namely, the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, the United Automobile Workers’ Union, the United Rubber Workers’ Union, and the United Shoe Workers’ Union, voted after a secret 48-hour conference to withdraw from Mr Parry Bridges’ C. 1.0. Industrial Union Council, and alleged simultaneously that the council “has worked hand in glove” with the Communist Party to the detriment of Labour.
The iom' unions represent over 20,000 workers in the Los Angeles area. In a nine-point denunciation of Mr Bridges and his policies, the unions agreed to establish a C. 1.0. Council independent of the Bridges group, and agreed unanimously to boycott Mr Bridges’ Stale Labour Convention schedule for August 19 to 21 at Los Angeles. The allegations against Mr Bridges included, acting as a dictator, subordinating C. 1.0. interests to Communism, maintaining control by fraud, and appointing Communists to executive positions regardless of their ♦ ability.
