Cunningham and Wilson Shine
At Sturges Park. Otahuhu. Cunningham was the best back on the field, the dry conditions suiting his style of play admirably. His dash and line-kicking were a revelation, while he scored a splendid try and converted all three Hikurangi scores.
Hard put to find openings early. Gibson kept Hedge at bay, and in the last quarter of an hour emerged at his dazzling best, completely outplaying the Otahuhu backs and scoring two tries.
Hikurangi forwards were too light m the scrums, but wore superior in the loose, where Pomfrett and Booth shone. Not much was seen of the rest, who had to graft hard to give tire backs a chance.
With every back getting hi s man and the forwards joining in with smashing counter-attacks, Hikurangi kept the opposing back-lino well oottled. driving attacks across the paddock and preventing ground being lost.
For Otahuhu, Massey, who will be remembered as a wing three-quarter for Whangarei Old Boys a couple of seasons back, played well in that position.
