East Coast Stock For Northland
A fairly large importation of East Coast run cattle is being made to Northland this week.ln a few days a consignment of about 180 Polled Angus and Hereford rising two-year-old heifers is expected at Tangowahine on account of a district farmer, after having been shipped from Gisborne. “A good deal of store stock went away from the North during the winter,” said the agent handling the transfer, this morning. “In addition, the recent floods and general weather conditions have brought about a considerable shortage of feed on the East Coast. Consequently, the market is much easier down there than here, and makes this importation an opportune move.” The agent said that the store cattle market in Northland was now very firm.
“All farmers who have held their stock thus far through the winter will continue holding to cope with the extra feed which must come in the spring,” he added. Facial Eczema Aftermath. The dairy market in the North is also firm. Although prices slipped back a few weeks 'ago, they have now more than recovered, and values are somewhat higher than at this time last year.
Agents consider this state of (affairs to be due largely to the manner in which Northland dairy resources were drawn on by Waikato buyers and others to build up the latter’s herds after the heavy ravages of the late summer facial eczema outbreak. While it does not appear that farmers of the Whangarei district have by any means oversold .they are retaining all available stocks for the coming season. Although the fine weather of the week-end has made 'an appreciable difference, there being a marked response in the growth of grass, feed remains fairly short in the North on account of the excessive moisture. Pasture has remained dormant on a waterlogged soil.
