Whangarei’s Party

The Y.W.C.A. room at Whangarei was the scene of a very jolly party on Saturday evening last, when Kupe and Princess Raranga were given the opportunity of meeting many Young Northlanders from Whangarei.

Marjorie Maddren and her friends were responsible for all arrangements, ahd made a thoroughly good job of organising the evening. Only two parents were present, and they had no hand at all in the conduct of the evening.

H.Q. cinematograph provided the first entertainment, and between films there was little hesitation about items.

Nigel McLachlan recited, Ellen Fry played the piano, Leila Banks sang, Dawn Ross recited and Marie Thompson sang once and tap danced on another occasion. Nola Provan recited and Ida Rowsell played popular songs

upon the piano whilst the assembled company joined in community singing. Ola Waring was another who recited. It needed only Marjorie’s “I call upon Blank to perform.” and the item was under way. After the pictures Ida Rowset I stepped in as games leader and entertained the party until supper was served. During the evening Kupe spoke oi the Hapu scheme. He told bow branch clubs had been formed in some country districts and how he hoped that interclub visits might be arranged. Whilst he would very much like to see hapus formed fn the town, he knew that boys and girls in Whangaroi had much to* occupy them with Y.W.C.A., Boys’ Brigades, Scouts and such activities. Whether or not they had room for hapus as had the country folk was for them to say. There was an alternative suggestion and that was that Whangarei Kupe Club members who felt they had insufficient time to give to regular hapu meetings might enrol as “active” members. Their card« could be kept at H.Q. in a special compartment, and such active members could bo called upon whenever an urgent, job required to be done. There was pressing need for local members to be on call. It was, however, for members themselves to decide which suited them best, and he would leave it to them to chat over in their own time. After supper, bouquets wore presented to Miss Bennett, who had made

the hall available, and to Princess Raranga, whilst Kupe received a buttonhole of daphne. A well-conducted party was brought to a close when senior members waited behind to leave the hall as they found it. Betty R. was. called into service to take home members who lived a long way from the meeting place.

Among those present were:—Marjorie Maddren, Lorna Ryan, Ida Howsell, Ellen, Irene and Jean Fry, Nola Provan, Ola Waring. Thelma. Edna and Joan Mcßeth. Joan Fox. Kathleen Tercel, June Dudding. Mavis and lan Boucher, Madge Dickinson, Pam Hegloy. Dora and Bobby Kennett, Joan Heath, Been Gilbey, Doris. Avisjmd Enid Runciman, .Toy Doel. Terry Williams. Brenda Griffiths, Norman Zimmer.
