’Change Opens Quietly

A fresh week on ’Change opened quietly, and only a small list of sales v/as recorded at the first call, while fresh bidding lacked animation in most sections.
Bank shares were quiet, but New Zealands looked firm, with buyers keen at 45/- and sellers 6d higher. The holiday in Sydney had a tendency to lessen interest in Australian securities. Apparently the dividend announcements of the Broken Hill Proprietary directors failed to satisfy the market, .and despite record profits shown the shares sold 9d lower; at 60/6, after which the market lay between 60/- and 60/9.
There were few changes in local industrials. Gas shares had a market between 20/- .and 20/5, and Sanford retained recent improvements with quotations for the ordinaries from 4/to 4/9;
Government stocks were quiet, but there was no change in values. Prices at the noon call resulted:— Broken Hill Pty., £3 0/3; Henry Jones, £2 8/-; New Zealand Newspapers, £1 13/6; Talisman rights, 2/-,
