Ben Nevis Motel Destroyed By Fire
[Per Press Association. Copyright! WANGANUI, This Day. The Ben Nevis Hotel, situated 14 miles south of Wanganui, was destroyed by fire between four and five o’clock * yesterday morning. The main hotel building was one of the oldest land marks on the West Coast of the North Island. The only portions not burned were three, detached rooms at : the bdck of the hotel, which were the only pftes to escape destruction when the orlgihal Ben Nevis Hotel was burned 52 years ago.
An elderly Wanganui resident, Mrs. Grace Kenny, was cut off from escape through the building by a mounting wall of flame, and unable to reach the ground from the fire escape down which she had been climbing, she jumped, and suffered severe injuries to her back. The hotel, which was of about 23 rooms, was owned by Mr. E. De Tourret The original license for the hotel was issued over 80 years ago, and it was the first licensed hotel between Wellington and Wanganui.
