Mr Doug. Johnson, for five years a student at the Whangarei High School, leaves for England this month to take up a five-year commission with the Royal Air Force. Mr Johnson is now an employee of the Lands Department, ,at Wellington. The death has occurred of Mr. A. De Bathe Brandon, barrister and solicitor, a former Mayor of Wellington, at the age of 83. A member of the Wellington city council from 1886 to 1891, Mr Brandon was mayor in 1893-4. He was a member oi the board of governors of the Wellington College, from 1899 to 1914, and chairman of the board for the last 14 years of that period. In a letter received by a local resident, Mr G. H. Morrish, of Whangarei, stated that during their visit to Edinburgh, Mrs Morrish and he attended several social functions in connection with the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. One included a reception given by the Moderator of the General Assembly, Dr. J. Black, •and at which the guests numbered 1800. They were among 300 overseas visitors who were guests at U dinner at the Station Hotel under the auspices of the overseas committee of the General Assembly, and also attended a garden party given at Holyrood Palace by the Lord High Commissioner, who attended the General Assembly as the representative of the King. Mr Morrish was one of 130 guests at a dinner given by the directors of the General Electric Company, and he and Mrs Morrish had been invited to an afternoon to be given to overseas visitors by the High Commissioner for New Zealand.
