Dargaville Main Street Flooded
[Special to “Northern Advocate.”! DARGAVILLE, This Day. At an early hour yesterday morning, the main street of Dargaville was flooded, when the rising tide, swollen by flood waters, topped the banks of the Northern Wairoa River. The roadway was submerged to a depth of several inches, and the footpath curbs to a depth of about 2 feet. A number of shop floors were flooded, although no damage was done to the stock, as the shopkeepers, anticipating the rise in the tide, had removed all articles out of reach of the water. At 10.30 a.m. yesterday, the river again began to overflow its banks, and an hour later access to business premises at the- lower end of the town was blocked. Before full tide, the water commenced to fall and no damage was done.
Mr Chamberlain announced that General Franco had agreed to an investigation by two Navy experts into the bombing of British ships. General Franco had agreed to pay compensation if attacks were reported to be deliberate. Four men were injured when the British freighter Bellwyn was bombed, machine-gunned and set on fire in Gandia, says a Barcelona message.
