The preservation of the valleys in the Lake District, says a message from Rugby, has been carried a stage further by the purchase, subject to restrictive covenance with the National Trust, of a property which includes some of the most beautiful meadows on the shores of Crummock Water. * ♦ • » A message from Perth says the Government’s analyst reports that ore specimens from an extensive area 60 miles north of Meekatharra reveal an iron content of 67 per cent. He declares that the deposits are as rich as any in Yampi Sound. * * « * The South African golfer, A. D. (“Bobby”) Locke, and probably the English golfer, Sid. Brews, will visit Australia in September, and the former will also lour New Zealand. * « • n The Bisley correspondent of “The Times” credits the fine coaching of the New Zealander, Squadron-Leader S. Wallingford, as being responsible for the Royal Air Force victory in the inter-services match. Squadron-Leader Wallingford was second in the Donegal Cup competition, after the shoot-off following a tie. * * * * The Australian Associated Press states that it is not expected that the trade agreement between Britain and America will bo signed before the end of July. Continued delays are due to hundreds of items requiring much detailed technical examination, besides discussions with the Dominions. * * * ■> , Venezuela has notified its intentions of withdrawing from the League of Nations. m * * • With reference to the frontier incidents on July 8, when Italian guards fired on and wounded two French civilians who unintentionally crossed the border, Italy has replied that the soldiers have been punished and instructions issued to avoid any recurrence of a similar incident. The Italians admit the victims’ rights to indemnity. £ « * * The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr R. A. Butler, announced in the House of Commons, on the subject of General Franco’s proposals to Britain, contained in his recent reply to the British Note regarding the bombings of British ships in Spain, that Mr Chamberlain would make a statement on the whole question as soon as he was in a position to do so.
