Sectional Contracts For Hospital Rebuilding
Subject to the approval of the Health Department, the Whangarei Hospital Board today consented to divide the contract for rebuilding at the hospital into seven sections. A suggestion on these lines was made by the architect, Mr A. P. Morgan. Messrs H. Younger and L. Reynolds considered that the alteration would be advantageous to both parties. Each of the seven jobs would be completed separately and handed over separately. The original contract, embodying all the works, was for a period of two years, and if the contractor so desired, there was no necessity for him to hand over any section of the work until the expiration of the full term. Convenience To Hospital.
Mr F. Higginson: We will have the convenience of having the use of each of the sections as they are completed. One member suggested the possibility. under the division of contracts, for the contractor to complete the more payable section first, and then fail to carry out the remainder. However, it was considered that the board was fully safeguarded by the provisions of the contract, and general appreciation of the manner in which Mr Haigh was carrying out the work was expressed. Completion Next Month,
Forwarding a schedule of the contracts with the time which Mr Haigh considered should cover their completion, the architect wrote: "These times, however, may be modified considerably to suit the working conditions of the hospital, but now that he is well started and able to form a better estimate of the time required, he is optimistic of being able to complete all seven contracts well under the two years allowed:—Laundry ,£6541 (August 24, 1938). nurses’ home wing £3620 (August 24 1. men's ward £3581 (October 31), children’s ward £1950 (December 24), maids’ quarters £9Bl (April 30, 1939), laboratory wing £3389 { July, 30, 1939), women’s ward £9579 (February 24. 1940). The expenditure j on building totals £29,641. to which! has to be added £3OOO for machin-[ cry." i
Mr Morgan said that the division of Iho contract would enable each section to be completed and handed over to the board for occupation at the completion of each contract, to suit the board's convenience, and to work in with the operation of the hospital. The maintenance under each contract would be for 90 days from completion for each section, but while on the job Mr Haigh would also undertake to do such work as might be necessary, which could be traced to faulty workmanship.
Mr B. Hancas has returned to Kaitaia aflci an absence of over a year, curing which he visited his home country. Sweden.
