O'Brien, a New Zealander, who went to the Antarctic with the Byrd parly, that there was no possibility of exploiting gold, coal or any other mineral deposit in the ice areas, said that, provided reasonably rich mineral deposits were discovered in the Antarctic, there was nothing to stop them being profitably worked. He pointed out that coal mining was in active progress in Spitzbergen, and active mining had been conducted for nearly 100 years in Greenland. ■
