Lancastrian Bowlers Worry Australians

(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 18. Batting first in the match commenced today against Lancashire, the Australian cricket team compiled 262 runs for five wickets. The wicket was true and easy, and the weather dull. McCabe, Ward, Walker, Barnes and O’Reilly were omitted from the visiting team, the last-named acting as 12th man. The Lancashire bowlers, Phillipson and Pollard, troubled the early Australian batsmen, the heavy atmosphere enabling the former to swing the ball freely. Phillipson failed to tempt the batsmen with outswingers pitched outside the off stump, but Brown flicked a straight one which was going away, and was easily caught at the wicket. Fingleton was joined by Bradman, who was suffering from sore eyes. The pair batted comfortably for half

an hour until Nutter was given the ball. He immediately worried Fingleton, whom he bowled in his first over. In the next over Phillipson had Bradman caught at second slips when the batsman attempted a hard drive. The score was then 35 for three wickets after 55 minutes’ play. A Heavy Task. Badcock and Hassett took up the heavy task. Hassett gave a bright exhibition, cutting and glancing Nutter admirably. A drizzle of rain began during the middle of the afternoon, when Phillipson and Nutter kept the batsmen on the defensive. Rain stopped play between 2.45 and 4.45 p.m.

The light was difficult and the wicket was tricky when play was resumed, but the bowlers were handicapped in their efforts to secure a foothold. Badcock’s 1000 Runs. Badcock with his score at 84, reached his 1000 runs for the tour. The 200 mark was pased after three hours’ play. Hassett was missed at 90 when ho returned a hard low chance to Wilkinson’s left hand. Badcock batted 2i hours for his 90 runs. He hit seven fours. The light improved and Hassett became lively. He punished anything short, and was undefeated at stumps for 118. Chipperfield batted poorly for 20 minutes.
