First State Tenant Receives His Key

Today the State Advances Corporation handed over its first key in the new State house “colony” at Dobbie’s Estate, Whangarei. Tomorrow the lucky first tenant moves in to his future home, and thereby becomes the first tenant in the first State house occupied in Northland under the Labour Government’s scheme. Within a few days. 11 other tenants will receive their keys and another fortnight is expected to see 12 happy * husbands warming their feet over the open living-room fire-places and 12 happy wives stocking their compact cupboards with all the requisites of home-making. Thirty-one houses were undertaken in the original contract at Dobbie’s Estate. Eight are now fullf completed and four others are expected to be ready for occupation within a week. Allocations have been > made for these first 12 houses and the tenants can take possession just as soon as they feel inclined. The lucky 12 include an electrician, a linesman, a civil servant, a contractor, an assist-

ant manager, a draughtsman, a garage foreman, an electrical contractor, a blacksmith, a pensioner, a clerical officer, and a newspaper correspondent —surely a representative gathering of civic occupations. For rent they will pay between 17/6 per week and 30/3 per week, according to the type of house rented. In the event of his failing to pay “on the nail,” a penalty of 2/6 per week is authorised to be inflicted on the erring tenant.after a reasonable time.

Work Preceding Rapidly. Work is now progressing apace on the buildings in Bobbie’s Estate, while contracts are \being arranged for the erection of eight other houses in the borough. As each groqp of three or four houses is completed the keys will be handed over to the respective tenants, and it is fully expected that another two months will see a further batch of houses having their chimineys smoking for the first lime.

On the afternoon of Friday, June 3, Mr J, A. Lee. Under-Secretary in Charge of State Housing Construction, accompanied by Mr J. G. Barclay. M.P., will he present at Bobbie’s Estate to perform the official opening ceremony. The occasion will mark a red-letter day in Wffiangarei’s housing construction history.

Train the young to take your place When you cease to set the pace. All you now direct with pride, To their eager minds confide. Train the young in wisdom’s way, Adding knowledge day by day, How to ease for colds assure Always Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. 5
