Lower Grant From State Last Year

Government grants received by the Otamatca County Council last year, Mr Rodney Coates reported this week, amounted to £9544. a reduction of £1499 on the previous year’s figures, due mainly to the Main Highways Board taking control of Stale highways. ‘■lt is estimated,” he said, “that the taking over of certain main highways in the county as State highways relieved the council of an annual expenditure of £llOO, but, owing to the increased hospital levy, increased rates ©£ remuneration and reduction in the number of working hours, this relief was more than offset, as the general rate had to be increased in every riding—the total increase over the whole county amounting to £ll6O, “Despite this increase, the riding accounts finished the year in exactly the same state as at the commencement of the year, but had it not been for certain transfers from separate accounts,' totalling £SBB. the ridings would have slipped back by that amount.”
