“Advocate” Staff Social
Staff members of the Northern Publishing Company and their friends were present in large numbers at the initial social organised by the “Advocate” Welfare Club last evening.. Ces. Wright’s orchestra set the rhythm to a number of dances, while competitions, items, cards and burlesques contributed to a most enjoyable evening.
Opportunity was takeh ■ to farewell Mr and Mrs W. E. Crawford, who are [ leaving shortly on a tour abroad. On ( behalf of the staff Mr J. A, Inkster presented Mr Crawford with a pipe and tobacco and Mrs Crawford with a fountain pen as tokens of esteem. Mr J. W. George also spoke on behalf of the staff. Both the recipients suitably replied. Items during the evening were contributed by Miss R. Hilder, Miss Stella Gray, and Messrs B. McAulliffe, P. Pomery, M. Stewart and R. Shaw. Originality was the key-note to the outstanding success of the function, particularly the court scene, in which Mr and Mrs. Crawford were arraigned before the High Court judge (Mr Inkster) and, after being charged with diverse felonies, were presented with farewell gifts as punishment, Mr Gordon Mac Kay created a genuine Scottish atmosphere when he appeared on the scene with his bagpipes Following him were Ces. Wright, in kilts, manning the big 1 drum, while the remainder of the male staff marched two-deep in burlesque imitation of the Scottish pipers soon to be seen- in the local streets.
The evening concluded with a sale of foodstuffs, the result being a donation of £3 to the Tikipunga Orphanage Fund. Owing to the unique success of last evening’s function it has been decided to hold regular socials in the future.
