Councillors Chosen By Lot
A ceremony unique in the history of the Otamatea County Council , took place on Wednesday morning when the returning officer, Mr E. G. Aickin, decided by lot who was to be the second councillor for the Kaiwaka riding for the ensuing three years. At the recent county elections four candidates. Messrs W. Littin, E. Brown, R. Hastie and Balderson offered their services. The elections resulted in Mr Littin receiving 93 vote-?, Messrs Hastie and Brown -73 and Mr Balderson .48.. r <• A recount showed that in one booth Mr Hastie dropped a vote, bringing his total to 72, but he gained this at another and his score was once more 73. On Wednesday morning Messrs Hastie and Brown attended at the council chambers whei’e their names were written on papers and then dropped in a hat. ■ Mr. Aickin then drew one paper, which was found to bear the name of Mr R. Hastie, who thus retains his seat on the council along., with Ml* Littin, who has given over 30 years service to the Kaiwaka riding.
