Local Branch Of Justices’ Assn. Not To Be Formed
Consideration of the formation of a Northland branch of the Justices Association of New Zealand was given at a meeting of local Justices of the Peace last evening, presided over by Mr F. S. Hall. Fourteen attended the meeting, most of them being from Whangarei and the immediate, vicinity.
It was generally felt that no good purpose could be served by forming a local branch, but that a committee of three should be set up to arrange quarterly lectures on the general duties of Justices by the magistrate or local barristers. The committee appointed comprised Messrs F. S. Hall (chairman), E. L. Whimp and H. C. Hemphill. '■
A very interesting address on the punishment of crime was' given by Mr G, N. Morris, S.M., who outlined the general legal principles involved, and illustrated his points by practical examples. Various methods of punishment were examined, particular reference being made to the treatment of charges of drunkenness.
