Drinking By Boys And Youths; Mr. Brake’s Warning

[Special To “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. AT THE MEETING OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF PHYSICAL WELFARE AND RECREATION' YESTERDAY. MR L. J. BRAKE. OF WHANGAREI, DREW ATTENTION TO THE NUMBER OF YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY WHO TAKE ALCOHOLIC LIQUOR. He suggested that this was a matter which should come under the notice of the Council, and that efforts should be made to see that the law prohibiting people under 21 from drinking licjuoi. was obeyed.

Drinking in Hotels,

He said that if the Council would get the young people interested in sport and their physical well-being, when they were under the age of 21. he felt that, in many cases, there would not be the desire for liquor in after-life. There was hardly a hotel today where boys could not be seen getting liquor with the utmost freedom.

The young people of today, with the shorter working week, enjoyed wonderful privileges, and he thought that instead of many of them drifting into towns on Saturday mornings, and dissipating their strength, efforts should be made to try to lead them out into other ways, where they could spend their time to greater advantage.
