Aussies And Bradman Booed
(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 24,
“Aussies Booed,” “Bradman Booed at the Oval,” are among the headlines in the morning newspapers, recording today’s incident at the Oval. Despite Mr Jeanes’ official explanation of Bradman’s desire to conserve the bowlers, in view of casualties, several critics take Bradman severely to task. “The Times” critic, however, commenting on the “terrible hullabaloo,” states: “It comes to a pretty pass when a captain has to make a public apology. I never believed I would hear anything so distressing, but when the Australians took the field, Bradman was booed all the way out. “A possible mistake in tactics is nc excuse for a gross insult to the greatest cricketer of the age. It was a moment of shame for the Oval.
Howard Marshall says it is a pity the game should be reduced to such a travesty. . C. W. Packford, writing in the “News Chronicle,” says: “Bradman was severely criticised, and rightly so. It made a farce of the whole thing, and most definitely was not cricket.”
