Wiiangarei exhibitors are in a quandary owing to the plethora of shows towards the end of June, a happening, by the way, that may tend in some degree to militate against the entry at the local exhibition. New Plymouth Show on June 23 and 24. Taumarunui on June 25, and Whangarei on June 30. If local dogs are sent to the Taranaki centre, the week-end intervenes, and they cannot get back until the 27th, which gives little time for recuperation before the local flutter. The same trouble occurs with the King Country event. Auckland exhibitors at New Plymouth may consider twice before bringing their show-drunk charges North. The fixing of a circuit of dog shows is not practicable, as so manv of the smaller fixtures are held » in conjunction with A. and P. Societies. \ A NEW KENNEL, Whangarei may not have many exhibitors, but It is doubtful if any other place of like size can equal it for the quality of its dog flesh. The setting up of a nog/ establishment of high class stock is therefore worthy of special mention. The cult of the pedigree dog is ever expanding. New enthusiasts are constantly appearing, some of whom soon retire from the arena when they realise that champions do not appear in every litter, whilst others, made of sterner stuff, battle along until eventually they get to the top of the tree. Terrier men have long realised that Jack Murphy, with his inherent liking for a classy smooth, would sooner or later throw down the gage of battle to the terrier world, with an oven money chance of securing a goodly number of the coveted red tickets, We mentioned before the arrival of Salford Star, the well-performed Aussie who is capable of extending the best in this country, and are nqw in a position to divulge a well-kept secret and let it be known that the genial show manager, not content with buying a good one. has managed something not sc easy, but far more creditable. in breeding what is possibly the most promising fox-terrier puppy yet seen in the North.
Everyone has heard of “Tootha Sceptre,” and the favoured one is chock full of the blood and style of the great Australian champion. Sired by “The Actor,’’ who is considered to possess the best forehand yot seen in New Zealand, out of “Janet, of Gcraldton,’’ a member of a most successful family, the latest black and white loses nothing on the score of ancestry. The picks of the new kennel will perform under the prefix of “Pandora.” The fabled lady lost all mankind’s blessings except “Hope,” and wc hope that the Pandora pup fulfils its present promise and turns out a real flyer. With Star, Janet and the young one, this kennel is already in a position, to challenge the best. BARKS. Bill Griffiths, the capable secretary of the Northland Kennel Club, is busy with the schedule and hopes to issue it next week. The “Gambler" affix has probably labelled more champion cockers than any other kennel in New Zealand can claim, and the old brand is now sheltering a couple of-real classy coloured one. Tlio first of the stock sired by the imported yellow Labrador “Tnnutsick Jan” are now moving around, and are distinctly promising. Critics of borzois should remember that the Russian wolfhound is not merely a rough-coated greyhound. As a matter of fact, the borzoi and greyhound standards differ in many respects beside coal.
