An officer of the New Zealand Staff Corps, Captain A. H. L. Sugden, has been appointed by the Mini'ster of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, to represent the naval, military and air forces on the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation, in accordance with the provisions of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act. Professors Belshaw (Auckland Universiy) and Larsen (Canterbury) are touring Northland investigating the economic results of the native land settlement scheme in reference to the Maori people. They are calling at most settlements and contacting many people, both European and Maori, in the pursuance of a very thorough research. The professors expect to spend about ten days in the province. Cabled messages received in Auckland on Monday reported the death at St. Ives, in Cornwall, of Mr Joseph McCartney Wilson, a well-known Auckland sportsman. The cause of has death was heart failure. Mr Wilson was a grandson of Mr W. C. Wilson, founder of the “New Zealand Herald,” and a son of Mr Joseph Liston Wilson. Fifty-five years old, he was born in Auckland and educated at Queen’s College (later Prince Albert College). He was a large shareholder in the firm of Wilson and Horton and a director of a number of local companies.
