The Czechoslovakan situation is reported to be easier. Chi’istchurch firemen have demanded an inquiry into the allegations that certain members did not turn out to a fire as they were on holiday. The aircraft wreckage found on the banks of an island near Burma has been identified as portion of the plane in which the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith disappeared. Commenting on a maniifesto issued by four senior officers of the New Zealand Territorial Force, the Minister of Defence, severely criticises their action. The last plane owned byHhe Hawke's Bay and East Coast Aero Club w'as put out of commission when making a fciced landing a: Napier Aerodrome yesterday. No one was hurt. The first meeting of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation was held yesterday. More riots and bloodshed have occurred in Palestine. The Australian v. Surrey match was drawn. Mr Nash says that as soon as the Government hears from the British and Commonwealth Governments, it is hoped to go ahead with the transtasman air mail service. Attention is again directed to Henry Wilson’s monster sale of Cullen’s Waihi stock, bought at 8/6 in the pound. Tremendous reductions have been made in all departments of the store and patrons will find that their money can be laid out to very great advantage.
Steady progress is being made with the final portion of the railway link to Dargaville.
The Acting Minister of Agriculture, the; Hbn .F. Lang,stone, announced yesterday that Dr. I. J. Cunningham, research officer in animal nutrition ‘at the Wallaceville Veterinary Laboratory, who is at present in Australia, will represent New Zealand fat the annual general meeting of the Australian Veterinary Association. The meeting will be held in Melbourne at the University Veterinary Research Institute from May 23 to 28. Mr W. E. Darlow was appointed chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday, in place of the Hon. T. Bloodworth, who was defeated at the recent elections.
Heads Road Improvements, Much-needed improvements will shortly 'be effected to the Whangarei Heads Road in the vicinity of Parua Bay, according to information given by the District Engineer to the Public Works Department, Mr R. H. Packwood, this morning. A survey party is already in the locality laying out plans for the work. This section is at present very narrow and winding, and the improvements will be greatly appreciated by the many motorists now making use of the road.
