Basketball Notes

The grading of clubs affiliated with the Whangarci Basketball Association was completed in readiness for the season's competition play at the grading tournament held at the High School courts last Saturday afternoon. Of the 23 teams which will now participate in this year’s competitions. 15 took part in the tournament. Owing to the commencement of the school holidays, none of the school teams was able to appear. The tournament honours rested with Old Girls A in the A grade, Old Girls Reserve being second. In the B grade Kauri were placed first, Y.W.C.A. A and Glenbervie dividing the honours, for second place. In the C grade Woolworths secured the most points, with Ramblers second. A new team, Whakapara. has entered the competition, and has been automatically placed in the C grade. As there wore already nine teams in this division, Old Girls B has been transferred to the E grade. .. Thus there are now seven A grade teams, and eight in each of the B and C i grades. r . I The Grading. j The grading has been finalised as follows: j A Grade: Old Girls A, High School A, High School 81, Old Girls Reserve, Bargain Stores A, Convent Old Girls, and Hikurangi. , E Grade: . Old Girls B, Bargain Stores A, Glenbervie, Kauri, Y.W.C.A. A, High School 82, Lupton A, Woolworths. C" Grade; Whakapara, Ramblers, McKenzie's, Lupton B, Y.W.C.A. B, High School 83, High School C, Northland College. At a meeting of the Whangarei Association last night Miss W. C. Bosselmann was appointed as official coach to the association; in place of Mr Stretton, who is unable to act in this capacity this season.

It has been decided to conduct a tournament at Whangarei on the King’s Birthday, Monday, June 6, commencing at 9.30 a.m. DRAW FOE SATURDAY. ' T?te association’s competitions will commence on Saturday, May 14, when the first series of games will be played on the High School courts. The draw is as follows: A Grade.~No. 1 court, 1,30 p.m., Old Girls A. v. Convent (Mr Stretton); 1.50 p.m., Old Girls Reserve v. Hikurangi (Mr Stretton); School A v. School 81, B, Grade.—No. 2 court, 1.30 p.m,, Glenbervie v.. Kauri (Miss Bosselmanh).; 1.50 p.m., Y.W.G.A, A v. Woolworths; School B2 v. Lupton A. Old Girls B a bye, C Grade.—No. 3 court, 1.30 p.m, Ramblers v, McKenzies (Mr Lowe); 1 50 p.m., Whakapara v. Y.W.C.A. B (Mr Lowe). Northland College v. Lupton B; School B 3 v. School C. Owing to the school holidays, allmatches in which High School and Lupton teams are scheduled to take part will.be played at a later date

Bargain Stores teams will not participate, out of respect to the relatives of Gwynth Price, whose death occurred last night.
