Mr A. C. Symons

OBITUARY

Mr A. C. Symons, engineer to the Whangarei Hospital Board, passed away suddenly last night. The deceased, who was born in Auckland 52 years ago, served his apprenticeship as an engineer at Mr George Fraser’s foundry. He later went to Rawene in the days when the Hokianga was the scene of great shipping activity, and opened a general engineering business. He also became engineer to the Rawene hospital until, sdme 15 or 16 years ago, he was appointed engineer to the Whangarei Hospital Board, a position he held with great satisfaction to the board until the time of his death. As evidence of the esteem in which Mr Symons was held and the board’s estimation of his skill and integrity, he was appointed at the last meeting to be clerk of works in connection with the big building scheme to be commenced shortly. Mr Symons was held in the highest regard by all who knew him. He was especially well known in Masonic circles. He was a member of the craft of some 15 years’ standing, and had been a prominent member of Lodge Whangarei, No. 102, occupying the chair some seven years ago. He was one of the most valued P.M. and was also a member of the Board of General Purposes of the Grand Lodge.

A widow and family of two sons and two daughters are left. They are Mrs Gordon Smith, Kaitaia; Miss Dorothy Symons, Whangarei; and Messrs Jack and Frank Symons. Deceased is to be accorded a Masonic funeral tomorrow morning. The cortege will leave the late residence, 12 Lupton Avenue, at 11 o’clock. A Lodge of Sorrow will be held at the Masonic Temple, Albert Street, at 10 o'clock.
