Six Years For Frightful Crime

“You have been guilty of a frightful crime. You did not want a housekeeper; you simply got a young woman there for the purpose of violating her. What I should do is to order you a flogging,” stated Mr Justice Blair, when William Charles Norman, a labourer of Otaki, appeared for sentence, having been found guilty of rape, assault so as to cause bodily harm, and also assault. His Honor stated he was taking into consideration that Norman was an oldish man and he would not take that course. “I Ask God to Spare Me.” He added that the. prisoner had spent a considerable time in gaol and was going to spend some more time there. Really, he should impose a sentence of 10 years for such a frightful crime. ■
Norman: I ask God to spare me. His Honor: I am going to give you a nominal sentence of five years for rape. On top of that you assaulted the woman when she was trying to escape. 'You went after her, and for that you get another year, making six years in all. f • • Habitual Criminal, “Then i you escaped off the train when in lawful custody, and for that you get six months. Finally, , I am going to declare you an habitual criminal.”
Norman: I ask God to spare me His Honor: Take him away.
