Ethiopia Far From Conquered

—HAILE SELASSIE

(Received 2 p.m.) , * LONDON, May 8.

On the eve of the League Council meeting, where Abyssinia will be one of the most difficult problems, Haile Selassie has published a lengthy document based on despatches from secret Abyssinian sources. These assert that the country ■ is far from being conquered .throughout the west, north and south-west. x

The greater part of Abyssinia, he states, is still under Abyssinian chiefs, and resistance, at present, is more intensive and effective than at any time since the autumn of 1936.

Mr Vernon Bartlett, in the “News Chronicle,” ascribes to the Spanish and Abyssinian situations the unprecedented resentment againS; the British Government on the eve of the meeting of the League Council, at which Spain may charge Britain with a breach of the Covenant in connection with. failing to terminate German and Italian intervention.
