Bay County Council Meets

The following were present at the ordinary monthly meeting of the Bay of Islands County Council, held on Wednesday, the 13th inst.—Crs. H. T. Atkinson (chair), A. E. Bisset, C. F. Reed, D. Rintoul. ,1. T. McKeown, S. W. Smith, T. Williams. H. T. Bates and G. H. McKenzie. The council agreed to support the project outlined in a letter received from the Opua Port Development Association relative to endeavouring to have Opua declared a port of entry. Dealing with, a circular letter from the Whangarei. Trades Council, relative to the proposal to form a separate industrial district for Northland, the council unanimously decided to support the proposal. The clerk was instructed again to write to the Minister of Public Works urging, the necessity of completing the gap between the WhakaparnRussell main highway and the Kawa-kawa-Waikare Road.

The riding member and the engineer were instructed to submit a report on the access road to the Oromahoe school. Mr S. Clark waited on the council and stressed the necessity of having the access road, to his property completed at the earliest possible date. Mr Clarke pointed out to the council that he had consistently paid rates for 24 years, but had obtained little benefit. The assurance given him some two months ago that the road would be metalled immediately, he had ordered manure, with a view to preparing ‘the farm for dairying next season, but up to the present time nothing had been done, and he, wanted something more than assurances. The engineer explained that owing to the rush of work and shortage of contractors, the metalling had been delayed. However the contract had been let and the contractor was only waiting now for the weather to take up, when the work would be proceeded with. Mr Clark expressed satisfaction with the assurance given. Dealing with the cost of sealing Gillies Street, together with curbing, channelling, etc., which exceeded the estimates by approx. £270, the engineer submitted a report in explanation of the increased cost.
