Two Men Save Child From Drowning

The prompt action of two men, Messrs Apples Pirihi and Jim Bulloth, prevented a drowning fatality at Tauraroa on Good Friday afternoon. Joan Brown, the 10-year-old daughter of Mr T. Lambert Browne, slipped as she was crossing the railway bridge near the quarry and fell into the Tauraroa stream, which was in Hood. The accident was witnessed by the two men, both a considerable distance away.

Both sprinted to the spot, and Mr Firihl dived in fully clothed. However, owing to a shortage of wind after his fast run, Mr Pirihi was soon in difficulties himself. Jim Bulioth, a youth, then dived in and took the girl to safety, while Pirihi also managed to reach the bank without suffering any ill effects.
