Women’s Civic League
The Whangarei Women’s Civic League held its annual meeting in the Y.W.C.A. rooms. Bank Street, on Tuesday. There was a very good attendance of members. Mrs W. J. Dawson was again returned as president, Mesdames W. Jones and Brake as vice-presidents and Mrs Allan as treasurer. Mrs R. Tudchope was appointed hon. secretary in place of Mrs Potts, who retired.. The committee elected were: Mesdames Allan, Blackburn, Cleaver, Drover. Green. Hore. Maxwell. McBeth, Miss H. and G. Jones. The presentation, of a Doulton salad lias carried out the duties of treasthas carried out the duties of treasurer uninterruptedly for 10 years. Mrs Dawson, the president, was given a bookcase in 'recognition of her ability in the chief executive position. Annual Report, Mrs Dawson reviewed a year of considerable activity. Subjects under review during the period were interesting and Instructive, sbo said. Remits received : from the National Council of Women, through the delegate, Miss Baggett, were prison reform, the habitual criminal, maternity services, the McMillan Report and the necessity for introducing women police for the better understanding' and guidance..of unfortunate women and girls.. Mrs Dawson touched upon the question of drinking at dances, saying the deputation representing women's organisations which waited upon the .Whangarei Borough Council on this question had received a very sympathetic hearing. Lectures given during (he year by Dr. D. Cook and Mr J. Skow, of (lie A,A., had been much appreciated.
By sustained efforts, members of the Civic League had raised £8 towards the St. John Ambulance appeal. Funds were raised by a series of bring-and-huy afternoons, and the president congratulated members on the success of their efforts. More Members Wanted.
A Post Office Savings Bank account is now being operated by the league.
“An earnest endeavour has been made to increase our membership/’ said Mrs Dawson. “and during the year I have had pleasure in welcoming seven new members.” A tribute v/as paid to f Mrs J. Skow, who left' Whangaroi to take up residence in Taurahga. , * It was unfortunate. Mrs Dawson said, that wet weather had prevented many from attending the celebration of .the league’s 11th birthday. The occasion, however, was a very,, sig>py one and the president ” dames Masters, Mclnnes and Fry for their valuable assistance. ■ She also spoke highly of assisting artists, the fine manner in which the hall had been' decorated, ■ and the good work done by the caterers. Mrs Dawson expressed thanks to the secretary and treasurer, the various, committees and members of the league for their generous and able support during her term of office.
