Over-Governed Dominions

AN Efficiency Journal published in Britain contains the following,-, which is worthy consideration: “Our four Dominions—Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand—have all slowed down by over-Government “Take New Zealand. It is a young country, with a population of only 1.500.000. It has only as many people as Birmingham and Leeds. Yet it had a big. top-heavy system of Government —a. system, which would require at, least 5,000,000 people to keep it up. It has a Prime Minister and 10 Cabinet Ministers, and 120 members of its two Houses. Also, it has several dozen “boards” that stand in the way of private enterprise.” In the opinion of Ihe writer of the article, what New Zealand needs most is an Executive Committee of about seven men in place of its big costly Government. ■
