—Says Mother FOURTEEN ounces is the weight of a daughter which 27-year-old Mrs Gwen Bass has presented to her husband, a Margate window-cleaner. The child is jifst an ounce heavier than the record for England, held by the son of a Newcastle plasterer, born 1935. Mrs Bass was allowed visitors when Baby was 36 hours old. The mother, a Welsh woman, said proudly: “It’s a miracle. “Baby’s only eight inches long. “Doctors told mo they did not expect her to live. “I’m determined to keep her alive.” , Efforts to obtain an- incubator having failed, the baby is wrapped in cotton wool and a blanket. Born three months prematurely, she is perfectly formed, even to finger and toe-nails. She is being fed with sugared water from a fountain-pen filler. The medical correspondent writes: The average weight of a baby when born is 71b 4oz—about eight times that of the Margate baby. A GAME of cards enabled a woman who could neither speak ncr write to make her will, says the ‘‘News Chronicle.” A paralytic stroke .left her helpless. She had no will. Her solicitor advised her to do so. But how? Doctor and solicitor discussed the problem and at last conceived the idea of the card game. Two Packs. . Two packs were specially prepared. One contained the titles of her properties and this the solicitor ■ handled. The ocher bore the names of the woman’s relatives. These cards she held herself. , - The game began with the solicitor laying down an “estate” card. • , . The woman covered it with the card bearing the name of the relative she wished to 'inherit it, and they “turned the trick.” So it went on until all the property had been disposed of. When the will was executed, says the “Lancet,” the court said that the method was both ingenious and fair.
