£SOO BEHIND IN PAYMENT OF UNEMPLOYMENT TAX

IPer Press Association.—Copyright J BLENHEIM, Tibs Day. Eight charges 'of failure to pay employment charges, involving an amount exceeding £SOO, were preferred against Bryant Brothers, sawmillers, Rai Falls, in the Blenheim Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The offences, which were admitted, were said to have taken place over a long period and were due, according to the prosecution, to lax business methods, which had resulted in the amounts accumulating until they reached proportions where the defendants were unable to pay. The charges comprised two general ones, alleging that defendants, as employers, after deducting wages tax, failed ■ to pay the amount to the department. Six charges concerned individual instances. The general charges, on the application of the prosecution, were amended to apply to individual employees. Counsel for the prosecution said an arrangement satisfactory to the department had been made for payment of the amount due. The magistrate, Mr T. E. Maunscll, imposed a penalty of £1 on each charge., with costs € 17.
