COUNTY COUNCILLORS AND RATEPAYERS
A remit from the Waikiekie-Waio-tira branch to the meeting of the Whangarei Sub-Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day that county councillors should .meet the ratepayers at least once a year, was not carried. In support of the motion, it was stated that,' in the opinion of the branch, county councillors did not meet the ratepayers often enough, and sometimes not at all. For example, the five-year plan of road construction had not been placed before the, ratepayers at all. There were many other matters which could be explained to the ratepayers. The president, Mr. A. B. Moore: Such meetings would do away with a lot of unfounded criticism'. Mr. D. G. Morrison said that in his riding he was certain that the riding member would be always prepared to meet ratepayers if they desired a meeting. He thought that the question was a local' matter and the Farmers’ Union could always ask the councillor to hold ,a meeting. He thought every councillor would be prepared to meet the ratepayers if there was a general desire for a meeting. The remit was lost.
