New Girls’ High School. The Whangarei High School Board meeting last night decided that the site of the new girls’ school will be on the north side of the footpath which crossed the girls’ grounds, leading to Russell Hoad. * * * * Towed by a Shark. All the thrills of deep-sea fishing were experienced by Mr R. Rudolph, of Ahipara, when using a stout schnapper line off the Ninety Mile Beach. He hooked a small mako shark, which towed the boat for some considerable distance backwards and forwards, before becoming exhausted. The fish weighed slightly over 10*Jlbs. * t * » Stumbling Horse Breaks Athlete’s Leg. When his horse stumbled and fell heavily, pinning him underneath, Mr Richard Smith, son of Mr and Mrs W. Seen Smith, of Tauteihuhi, Kohukohu, had his left leg broken in' several places. He was taken immediately to the Rawene Hospital. Mr Smith is a very promising athlete and is widely known throughout the Hokianga district. » * • * » Ducks for Dinner. Who wants two fine drakes for dinner? A meeting of representatives of the Northland Kennel Club and the Whangarei Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association last night conferred with the Whangarei A. and P. executive on the question of the housing of the dogs and poultry at the next Winter Exhibition. An alteration has been rendered necessary in the accommodation of these sections, owing to a request; from the Whangarei Borough Council! that they be divorced from the stalls j where foodstuffs are displayed. Sev-1 eral alternative suggestions were in- j vestigated, and the consensus of opin- j ion was that a marquee, lined withj timber to a height of about five feet, | would be the most practicable sol-* ution. A sub-committee consisting of j two delegates from each organisation | was appointed to inquire further and ] report their findings to the A. and P. j executive.

R. Heal, late of Pamapuria School, who deserves great credit for the industry and enthusiasm that is everywhere apparent amongst the school children. •*■ « * . Destructive Caterpillars. Our Okaihau correspondent reports that on Mr E. Dixon’s farm, at West -1 End, an army of tiny black caterpillars have ruined two acres of maize. The plants are stripped bare . of foliage, and so far efforts to check 1 the activities of the pest have been unsuccessful. , • Caught on His Son’s Line. A painful experience befel an- Ahi- ■;• para resident, Mr Mita Paratene, while . he was engaged in jagging eels in the Waiho Creek.. In tackling a large eel, he lost his grip on his jag, which was embedded in the body of the fish. Not wishing to lose the jag, he dived in £ after the eel and- caught it, but in ■ doing so was caught on the jag of his son’s line, the -hook entering the heel of his palm. The eel, becoming tangled in the -line, drove the hook deeper into his. hand, necessitating a trip to the Kaitaia Hospital, where -the hook was removed. The eel, in spite of this mix-up, was finally landed, and was said to be the largest ever, to be caught in the district. N ♦* * * * Appointment of Referees. Referees for all matches under, the jurisdiction of the Whangarei Rugby Union will in future be ap- /• pointed by a sub-committee comprisr ing one member nominated by the Whangarei Referees’ Association and two appointed from and by the management committee of the union. A i decision on these lines was arrived at by the special meeting of club delegates, called to consider rule re-. vision last evening.
