WHANGAREI ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE
The Mayor. Mr W, Jones, and Cv. A. T. Brainsby were last night appointed the Whangarei Borough Council delegates to the Anzac Day Committee to make arrangements for the celebrating of the day on April 25. The Mayor made a suggestion that the Returned Soldiers' • Association might be asked this year to take over the organisation. Cr. Brainsby said that the association was an excellent organisation, but the celebration had always been a civic observance and once it passed out of the hands of the borough as representing the citizens, it would cease to be a civic ceremony. If this' occurred it might be the thin edge of the wedge for the abandonment of the r.ervi ce a 1 together. Cr. H. N. James; The returned men have done their part, and it is our duty to hold the memorial service. The Mayor: There is no difficulty about carrying on the service’ I merely put forward the comment as a suggestion. T don’t think there is u'ny intention of doing away with the service at all. That was not in ray mind, at any rate.
