ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

Basketball

‘■The 1937 season was the best in the Whangarei area," said Mr S. Lowe, the new president of the Whangarei Basketball Association, at the annual meeting held last evening in the Bargain Store room. In the absence of the president, Mr. R. T. Tudehopo, Mr. Lowe, one of the vicepresidents, took the chair.

The annual report showed that the season had been a very active and very beneficial one. A team from the North had' participated in the New Zealand tourney and the standard of the game had greatly improved. In the Northland tournament, held in the High School Grounds, Whangarei. and Mangonui tied for the Shield. Only two games during the whole season had to be postponed owing to the weather'. Seven teams had competed in the A grade, 6 in the B and 7 in the C. The proceeds from the Queen Carnival allotted the association £l6. The report showed a credit balance of £l6/0/8.

Election of Officers The resignation of Mr. R. T. Tudehope was received with regret. Election of officers resulted: — Patron. Mr. R. T. Tudehope; president, Mr. S. Lowe; vice-presidents. Mosdames Spring and E. Collins and Mr. J. Tudehope; secretary. Miss W. C. Eossclmann; treasurer. Miss N. James; hon. auditor. Mr. G. IT. Pankhurst; selectors. Miss Remus, Mrs. Shankland and Mr. Stretton; 'official coach, Mr. S. Stretton. It was decided that the grading committee be composed of the selection committee. Opening: day for the association was arranged for May 14. j It is expected that teams will enter j the competitions from the following:— | Bargain Stores, Woolworths, Kauri, McKenzies. Convent, Hikurangi, Y.W.C.A.. Northland College, Old Girls. Thanks At the conclusion of the meeting, hearty votes of thanks were passed to the retiring president, Mr. Tudehope, “who,'’ said Mr. Lowe. “is. largely responsible for the very satisfactory position the assocaition is in. It was decided to put his services' on record. Thanks were also passed to the Whangarei High. School and the Whangarei Public School for the generous use of the courts, to the Northern Publishing Co. for publishing the draw, and to Mrs Collins and; Mr Stretton | in appreciation of their efforts. I
