KAITAIA TOWN BOARD
The chairman, Mr J. T. B. Taaffe, presided over the monthly meeting of the- Kaitaia Town Board, held on Monday night, i Advice was received from Mr E. H. Kelly that the Public Works Department had given an undertaking to engage trucks only through the Mangonui County Carriers’ Association, and the board was asked if it was prepax’ed to enter into a similar arrangement. The chairman said he knew of no reason why the board should abject, or why the arrangement should not work to the benefit of the local bodies, as well as the association. Mr Moore: The board has not much option, for it can’t deal with 1 carriers outside the association. The chairman: The association aims at giving good service, and any carrier failing to give satisfaction is likely to be dealt with by the association. It was decided to enter into a similar agreement. Road Access Wanted. Mr A. H. Bagley wrote asking that motor car access be given to his section in Eden Street. It was decided to inform Mr Bagley that it had already been decided to form the street.. Free Water Wanted for Church. A request was received for a supply of free water to the Methodist Church. The quantity required would be about TOO gallons a year, it was stated. The trustees would pay all costs in making the connection. Mr Moore said he did not thi7jk that free water should be given to anyone. On the motion of Mr Clark, it was decided to obtain legal advice as to whether church property or Crown lands were liable for special rates. The Town Clerk said that there was a liability for the sanitary rate, and this should apply to the water.
Compensation Claim. Mrs Tua Nathan applied for compensation owing to the water mains having been taken through her Okahu property. The request is to be submitted to the board’s solicitor. Northland Court. Correspondence was received dealing with the proposed Northland Court at the Centennial Exhibition, and the moving picture to be taken of Northland industries and attractions. The film was expected to cost £125. The chairman said they could do little for Kaitaia alone, but if they were to come into the scheme for the whole of Northland, they would have to see that (hey obtained proportional prominence. The promoters of the scheme might, as Whengarei men, have their own axe to grind. Personally he would not. as a member of the Northland Committee, attend meetings at Whangarei. On the motion of Mr Moore, the Town Clerk was asked to write to other local bodies and inquire what they proposed to do. Street Channels. Mr Moore said a number of business people had complained to him about the state of the main street channels. The chairman: The biggest offenders are some of the business people themselves, who, contrary to the by-law. do their unpacking on the footpath. The Town Clerk said he had arranged for tlic cleaning up of rubbish from the street, but the man engaged had given up the job. He was now looking for another suitable man. It was purely a matter of getting the labour. He had spoken to the foreman about flushing the channels with water, and this could be done on one side without the necessity for using hose. Mr Moore: If business people are to some extent responsible for the litter, it puts a different complexion on the position.
