GAMES ATHLETES BREAK AUSTRALIAN RECORDS

Several Australian records were broken yesterday at the final competitive trials for the Empire Games athletes.
The South African, Fouche, with 49ft. 92-in., broke the record for the shot put, while Sutherland, of Canada, added 18ft. 5 5-Bin., to the previous best for the hammer-throw of 145 ft. 2 3-Bins.
Mumford and Hampson, of Australia, and Haley, Canada, broke lOsecs for the 100 yards events. G. Quinn. New Zealand, was timed at 21 9-lOsecs, only 4-5 s outside the Australian record for 220 yards. In this event. Shore, S. Africa, registered 22 l-10s and Holmes, England, 22 3-10 s. All the runners eased up toward the finish except Quinn, who seemed to bo striding at his top over the last 40 3'ards. Handley, England, broke the New South Wales record for 880 yards, taking 1m 55 l-5s and reducing the record by 7-10 s. The Australian record is 1m 555.
J. G. Lcekie. In the hammer-throw, reached 148 ft. lin.. while V. P. Boot, covered 880 yards in 1.56 1-10. Three New Zealand girls participated in invitation handicaps, the fourth division of which resulted;—Misses D. Burnley, scr. 1; D. Tong. 3yds. 2; D. Strachan. scr, 3. All the New Zealanders were timed at Ills.
Coy, of Canada, threw the discus 146 ft. 2in.—a record, Conriright, Canada. throw the javelins 198 ft. Tins.—n New South Wales record, and Duplcssis pole-vaulted 13ft. 4in. Dickinson, N.S.W., in the broad jump, smashed tlie Australian record of 24ft. Cl,ins., and C. H. Matthews, the Now Zealander. covered four miles in 19m 375, breaking another State record.
